Finding EU-funded PhD opportunities: a practical application route

Distinguish funded vacancies from institutional grant calls before preparing an application.

Identify what you are applying for

For MSCA Doctoral Networks, prospective doctoral candidates apply to advertised positions in funded projects. They do not submit the consortium’s network proposal themselves. Start with the official MSCA application guide and the individual vacancy.

Build a focused shortlist

Search EURAXESS opportunities and the recruiting university’s website. EURAXESS also includes opportunities outside EU funding programmes, so check the funding source on each listing. Search by methods and research interests as well as broad subject names.

Check fit before writing

Read the required qualifications, project aims, application documents, employment conditions, and eligibility rules. Mobility conditions can matter; confirm the applicable dates and interpretation with the recruiting institution. Keep a table of vacancies, deadlines, contacts, and missing documents rather than relying on memory.

Make the application specific

Explain how your previous work prepares you for the advertised question. Point to a relevant thesis, method, code sample, or research output where appropriate. Ask referees early and follow the requested format. For interviews, prepare to discuss both what you know and what you need to learn.

Before submitting: Check the live vacancy and current programme documents. This guide was reviewed on 3 October 2026; it does not list currently open positions or guarantee eligibility or funding.
